Congratulations to our chess team who represented England and Wales in the UK and Republic of Ireland final of the BB’s National Chess Competition on 2 April in Edinburgh and came third. They were beaten 5:4 by 1st Knocknamuckley (the Irish finalist) in the semi-final stage, but if they had won or drawn just one more game in this match, they could have gone on to win the competition, as 1st Knocknamuckley beat 7th Edinburgh (one of the Scottish finalists) in the final by a smaller margin than they beat 1st Cheam. Our team went on to beat 1st Stewarton (the other Scottish finalist) 7.5:1.5 in the final for the third place and have done really well to get so far, particularly as it is the first time we have entered the chess competition. We look forward to entering a team in next year’s chess competition and hope to gain first place.
